We were planning on leaving around 6:00am, but at 7:40am, we were still sitting in our driveway refereeing the first fights of the day and rearranging seats! 20 minutes later, with the odometer at 58,757, we were on our way. Our first stop was about 30 minutes into the trip for the potty, some coffee, and some gas -- with 500 miles to go to get to our "rest stop" of Sweetwater, TN, we were behind before we even began.
About 3 hours into the trip, I was relegated to sitting in the third row between the girls who were playing the classic kid game of "She breathed on me ... she did it first ... she touched me ...." I was serenaded with the cacophony of Toy Story 2 playing on Charlie's DVD player, Hannah training her pet dog on her DS ("Furball, sit ... Furball, come ... Furball, down), Ethan's Sega plug 'n play game with its incessantly irritating tune, and Olivia who was simultaneously watching The Little Mermaid on her DVD player, playing Angry Birds on my ipod, and whining about being bored.
We tried to break up the action with some old-fashioned car games .. you know the ones -- My Grandmother went to the store, I spy, The license plate game ... most of which were met with groans and gagging. Ethan, however, was excited to color in all the states whose license plates that we saw on his USA map. He found over 30 states by the end of the day!
We crossed through Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia and made it to Tennessee by late afternoon.
We stopped in Knoxville for some dinner at the Pizza Palace Drive-In which had been featured on the Food Networks "Diners, Drive-In's and Dives". Although we did not spend a fortune like we did at the last DD&D we visited, we would not recommend going out of your way to visit this restaurant. At least it was a break from the steady diet of cheez-its, skittles, and cereal bars that we had been consuming all day!
We finally made it to our hotel in time to hit the pool and jump on the beds -- tomorrow, we are off to New Orleans, LA, a mere 487 miles from here!
